A message from Steven Saxby – our new Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
I’m delighted and honoured to be your parliamentary candidate for the next general election. I would like to thank all those of you who took part in the selection – whether you voted for me or not, we all need to work together if we are to succeed as a Party.
I have working-class roots in the two cities but was born and grew up in East London and Essex. My early concerns about inequality led me to a commit to campaigning for justice, peace and equality and over the last 30 years – as a vicar, community organiser and trade unionist - I have led and won campaigns on many issues, not least on homelessness, the Living Wage and supporting refugees.
I am now bringing that experience to work with you and others to win this seat for Labour for the first time in its history. Tory MP Mark Field won by only 3,148 votes in June 2017; we’ve already seen Labour candidates elected to the Corporation of the City of London, and we are expecting huge gains for Labour in the Westminster City Council elections this May; at the next general election we will turn the parliamentary seat red too!
You know as well as I do that this constituency really is a tale of two cities, where obscene wealth and extreme poverty exist side by side. A Labour government will be “for the many”, lift people out of poverty and create a more equal society. I intend to develop Labour campaigns to expose Tory failure on some of the biggest issues facing us: cuts to public services, clean air and, above all, our housing crisis which is forcing people out of central London and on to the streets. I can only do this with your help.
I was able to meet and talk with many of you during the selection. I want to meet more of you as soon as possible. Please don't hesitate to ask for a meeting, share your views, and to invite me to events in your community. I want our campaigns to engage every member and reach every voter.
From now until 3rd May I have two key priorities: to continue to network and build relationships in the constituency, listening as to how we can best develop our local campaigns; and to support the Westminster Council elections. Every vote we gain for Labour in those elections will help us going forward. We all want to see a Westminster Labour Council and that is now within our grasp. We also know that the connections we make and votes we win for those elections will help us gain the Parliamentary seat. Indeed we cannot rule out a snap general election then or not long after. So, please get in touch with me and please join me on the Labour doorstep. I shall be out every Saturday and other times supporting our council candidates.
We can only win this seat if we win it together, and there will be lots of opportunities for you to get involved with campaigning and knocking on doors. So, please sign up to my bulletins via www.stevensaxby.com, and let’s get out there for Labour and make history – together.
