Women's Forum meet up on Wednesday 18th October

Our latest update on the Women's Forum from Women's Officer Gillian Arrindell

"We had another lovely meet up with old and new members; four new people introduced themselves to everyone. We talked about our personal wishes and hopes for Labour in the constituency, about canvassing and the upcoming women's stall which we hope to run weekly and in a variety of locations. Volunteers welcome!

We also talked about more women putting themselves forward for selection as councillors: we are still short of candidates and the selection process has already started. Get in contact if this is something that might be of interest to you.

Housing was a hot topic of discussion, with members expressing concern at the way in which some housing associations were treating long standing residents and the sharp rises in rent making it difficult for residents to sustain their tenancies.

We also talked about the Women's Conference in Brighton, as two women at the meeting had attended. It was very inspiring and more of us hope to be able to attend next year.

The newcomers unanimously expressed their nervousness about attending the branch and all member meetings, worried that they would find them unfriendly and intimidating and would feel unwelcome. If this is a concern to you, start off with one of our friendly meetings (women only), and if need be one of us can accompany you to the general meetings so that you won't be on your own. We have already arranged this for one of our members.

I lugged in my coffee maker from home and sadly, we drank too much coffee and ate too much cake but it was a very warm and friendly atmosphere and we will be doing this again on Friday 27th October at 7pm."
